Privacy policy
The short version. Copyslate does not collect any data. There is no account, no analytics, no crash reporting, no tracking and nothing is uploaded. Your clipboard history and your canvases are stored on your Mac and nowhere else.
The app's App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected.
What the app stores, and where
Copyslate is a clipboard manager, so it reads what you copy. Everything it reads is kept in local files on your Mac:
- Clipboard history: text, links, images and file references you copied, stored in Copyslate's own folder inside your user Library. This folder is marked as excluded from Time Machine and iCloud backups, so your history is not copied anywhere as part of a backup.
- Pins: items you pinned, stored with the history.
- Canvases: .slate files saved wherever you choose to save them, like any document. A .slate file contains the images and notes you placed on that canvas. If you move a .slate file to a shared folder or send it to someone, they get its contents.
- Settings: your shortcuts, history length, excluded apps and similar preferences.
Deleting the app and its folder removes everything except .slate files you saved elsewhere.
What the app never saves
- Items copied from password managers and other apps that mark clipboard contents as concealed or transient. These are skipped and never written to disk.
- Anything copied while saving is paused.
- Anything copied from an app you have excluded in Settings.
Network use
The app makes one kind of network connection: to Apple's StoreKit, to start the free trial, to complete the one-time purchase and to restore a purchase. That exchange is between your Mac and Apple. Apple handles the payment and your Apple Account; Copyslate does not receive your name, email address or payment details. Apple's handling of that data is described in Apple's privacy policy.
The app does not contact copyslate.com or any other server. Checking for updates is done by the Mac App Store, not by the app.
Permissions the app asks for
Copyslate reads the system clipboard, which on macOS needs no permission prompt. To copy screenshots the moment you take them, it watches the folder where macOS saves screenshots; macOS may ask you to allow access to that folder. The app does not request Screen Recording, Accessibility, Camera, Microphone, Location or Contacts access.
This website
copyslate.com is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising scripts. The web server keeps standard access logs (the requested page, time, browser type and IP address) for security and to keep the site running; each day's log is deleted after 14 days. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts and the animation library from Cloudflare's cdnjs; those services receive the ordinary request from your browser when the page loads, and nothing else.
The version sold on this website
A version of Copyslate sold directly on copyslate.com, unlocked with a license key sent by email, is planned. When it is on sale, buying it will require an email address so the key can be delivered, and the payment provider will process your payment under its own privacy policy. This page will be updated before that version goes on sale to say exactly what is stored and by whom.
Children
Copyslate is a general-purpose utility rated 4+ and does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever starts collecting data, for example for crash reporting, this policy and the App Store privacy label will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described here with the date.
