Support
Email support@copyslate.com. Say which macOS version you're on and what you expected to happen. A screenshot helps, and since you have Copyslate, it's already on your clipboard. Replies usually come within two working days.
Getting started
What are the shortcuts?
⌥V opens your clipboard history. Type to search, then press Return to copy the item, or ⌘P to pin it. ⌥⇧V drops your latest screenshot onto the canvas; when there's no fresh screenshot it shows or hides the canvas. Both can be changed in Settings.
Where is the app? I don't see a window.
Copyslate lives in the menu bar, at the top right of your screen, as a small clipboard icon. Click it for the menu, or just press ⌥V. If the icon is hidden because the menu bar is full, hold ⌘ and drag icons to make room, or open the app from Launchpad.
Can it open at login?
Yes. Turn on "Open at login" in Settings. macOS may show a notification that a login item was added.
Screenshots aren't being copied automatically.
Copyslate watches the folder where macOS saves screenshots (the Desktop by default). If you changed that folder in the Screenshot app, point Copyslate at the same folder in Settings. If macOS asked for folder access and you declined, grant it under System Settings, Privacy & Security, Files and Folders.
History and privacy
How do I stop Copyslate from saving something?
Choose "Pause saving" from the menu bar icon, or exclude an app under Settings, Excluded apps. Items from password managers are never saved, because those apps mark their clipboard contents as concealed.
How do I delete an item, or everything?
Right-click any item to pin it, delete it or add it to your canvas. To clear everything, choose "Clear History" from the menu bar icon. Pins stay.
Where is my history stored? Is it uploaded anywhere?
In a folder inside your user Library, on your Mac only. Nothing is uploaded; there is no account and no server. The folder is excluded from backups. Details are in the privacy policy.
How much history is kept?
Choose the number of items to keep in Settings. Older items are removed as new ones arrive. Pinned items are kept regardless.
Canvas and .slate files
How do I keep a canvas on top of another app?
Click the pin icon in the canvas title bar. The canvas then floats above whatever app you switch to, so you can model, draw or design with your references beside you. Click it again to let it behave like a normal window.
Can I add photos that aren't screenshots?
Yes. Right-click any image in your history and choose "Add to Canvas", or drag image files from Finder straight onto the canvas. ⌥⇧V is for your latest screenshot, taken in the last couple of minutes.
What is a .slate file?
A saved canvas, with its images, notes and layout. Open it to pick up where you left off. Finder shows a preview of the board. Anyone with Copyslate can open a .slate file you send them.
Something went wrong on the canvas.
Press ⌘Z. Every move, resize, rotation, flip and deletion can be undone.
Trial and purchase
What's free and what's paid?
Clipboard history and automatic screenshot copying are free forever. Canvas and Pins are free for 7 days, then a one-time purchase of $9.99 (or the equivalent in your local currency) keeps them. There is no subscription and no account.
I bought it on one Mac. How do I unlock it on another?
Install Copyslate from the Mac App Store on the other Mac, signed in with the same Apple Account, then choose "Restore purchase" in Settings.
I paid but Canvas is still locked.
Choose "Restore purchase" in Settings. If it stays locked, check that the Mac is signed in to the Apple Account that made the purchase (App Store, then your name at the bottom left). If that doesn't help, email us with the date of purchase.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases through the Mac App Store are refunded by Apple. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find Copyslate and choose "Request a refund". We can't issue App Store refunds ourselves.
Removing the app
How do I uninstall Copyslate?
Quit it from the menu bar icon, then drag it from Applications to the Trash. To remove your history and settings too, delete the Copyslate folder from your user Library's Application Support folder. .slate files you saved elsewhere are ordinary documents and stay where they are.
